Syria Begins Final Evacuation of Lebanon

Syria accelerated the pace of its troop withdrawal from Lebanon ahead of an April 30 deadline as more trucks carrying soldiers and weapons returned home Thursday while other units prepared to vacate positions in eastern Lebanon, Lebanese security officials said.
Syrian troops -- which have been concentrated for the past month in the eastern Bekaa Valley -- have been filtering out all week, but movements stepped up Thursday, and a senior Lebanese military official said the "final stage" of the pullout had begun.

Syrian soldiers early Thursday dismantled two military positions in the town of Mashghara in the southern part of the Bekaa Valley, Lebanese security officials said.

A convoy of Syrian armored vehicles and trucks, carrying about 270 soldiers and arms, ammunition, equipment and anti-aircraft guns, headed toward Syrian territory, the officials said. This leaves two Syrian intelligence and military positions in the town, the officials said.

Elsewhere in the southern part of the Bekaa Valley, trucks loaded with equipment, arms and ammunition, were spotted Thursday parked outside Syrian military positions in eight villages waiting for orders to leave. Most Syrian pullouts have occurred at night, apparently for easier movement when the roads are clear of civilian traffic.

In the market town of Chtoura near the Lebanese-Syrian border, 13 empty Syrian trucks and seven buses headed toward the central mountains to collect soldiers and arms, a Syrian officer said.

Bulldozers dismantled three military positions in that area near the Dahr el-Baidar mountain pass on the Beirut-Damascus highway, witnesses said.

Syrian soldiers have vacated half of their 20 positions in Baalbek, a Bekaa town famed for its ancient Roman ruins.
