An old farmer died and left 17 cows to his three sons. In his will, the farmer stated that his oldest son should get 1/2, his middle son should get 1/3, and his youngest son should get 1/9 of all the cows. The sons, who did not want to end up with half cows, sat for days trying to figure out how many cows each of them should get.
One day, their neighbour came by to see how they were doing after their father's death. The three sons told him their problem. After thinking for a while, the neighbour said: "I'll be right back!" He went away, and when he came back, the three sons could divide the cows according to their father's will, and in such a way that each of them got a whole number of cows. The Question: What was the neighbour's solution? |

Re: :)
With potent, flowery words speak I,
Of something common, vulgar, dry; I weave webs of pedantic prose, In effort to befuddle those, Who think I wile time away, In lofty things, above all day The common kind that linger where Monadic beings live and fare; Practical I may not be, But life, it seems, is full of me! ........................ |

i.e. the common denominator of 2, 3, 9 which is 18 while we have 17 cows. however if we divide over 18 we will still be left with one share which consist of 1/18 which is equal to one cow out of the 18 cows. so i would say the neighbour just went home brought one of his cows and he asked the sons to divide their shares. so if we do the calculation we get: 18/2 + 18/3 + 18/9 = 9 + 6 + 2 = 17 but if we take a look at the original calculations we see that: 17/2 + 17/3 + 17/9 = 8.5 + 5.7 + 1.9 = 16.1 and not 17, because of the numbers after the period. so if we try to reduce those decimal numbers to whole numbers we get: 8.5 = 9 5.7 = 6 1.9 = 2 which is the answer we got when we divided over 18 cows. so my answer would be is that he went back home brought one of his cows told them to divide and he ended up taking his cow back with him to home. so it is the same as if he told them to assume that you guys have 18 cows and divide. "no one ever saw me, nor ever will" means that this thing is not touchable or seen by the naked eye. "and yet i am the confidence ..... on this terrestrial ball" means that this thing gives people, animals and plants the confidence to live on this earth. i would say the future, since it never was but always to be, no one can read the future, and thinking of the future and dreams give you more confidence in life to achieve what you want from this life. |

Re: :)
I am the black child of a white father, a wingless bird, flying even to the clouds of heaven. I give birth to tears of mourning in pupils that meet me, even though there is no cause for grief, and at once on my birth I am dissolved into air. What am I?

do not breathe, but I run and jump.
I do not eat, but I swim and stretch. I do not drink, but I sleep and stand. I do not think, but I grow and play. I do not see, but you see me every day. |
