The collected knowledge of a 32-year-old

These pieces of advice are, of course, not meant to be a complete guide of how to live one's life, and the lists are certainly limited to my own experiences, and presented in no particular order.

Take them for what they are:
the opinions of a 32 year old, who's been spending the last four years - and probably the rest of his life - trying to figure out what the hell we're all doing here.

Things you should do

Question everything. Always dig to the root. Look at everything twice.

Pick up trash on campus.
Look both ways when crossing one-way streets in Beirut.
Give your mother flowers.
Tell people you love that you love them, every time you part with them. Read "The art of Happiness (Dalai-Lama)," "A history of God".
Write a blues song and try your hand at poetry. Keep a journal.
Turn off the damn TV. Surround yourself with people who have lived more than you.
Write a letter to a friend - a real letter - with paper and pen. Listen to Bob Marley closely (If you don't like him, you aren't listening hard enough, so read his lyrics. If you still don't like him, then you truly have no soul.)

Play in the fountain - at night - with someone you like. Write a letter to the editor. Vote common sense, not party lines. Think about where your tax money goes. Hug a Muslim. Look at everything twice.

Keep your cell phone on vibrate. Better yet, throw your cell phone off the top of a mountain. While you're on top of the mountain, sound your barbaric yawp.

Travel.

If you find something you truly love, put your arms around it, hold on tight, and immerse yourself completely within it until all you can see is joy, and the only thing you can smell is happiness. If you haven't found it yet, don't stop until you do. Never "settle" for anything. Support locally owned businesses.

Things I've learned

You are the only person you can always depend on. Everyone knows everyone in Beirut. Knowledge rubs off. There are more important things in life than Time Zones and Wal-Mart. Gay people are human beings and should be treated as such. Religion is a tool used to quell fears and control minds - practice morals instead.

There is something mystical and cathartic about the ocean. We cannot possibly be the only life forms that exist. The human race will eventually become extinct. I don't really know anything, and when you think about it, neither do you.
