Windows Update v6 Released as Microsoft Update

They are reporting that Microsoft have publically released Windows Update v6, now dubbed Microsoft Update. Users on Windows 2000, 2003 Server and XP have access to the web site after downloading an ActiveX update. The new update site supports both Windows and Office 2003 updates in one central location making it easier for customers to get a hold of the latest patches and updates available to Microsoft software.

Once at the website, you'll have to agree to download some new software which may take a couple of minutes, but once done you'll see the new version of the Windows Update website - although there don't seem to be any new updates on there at the moment. Windows XP users will have to have at least Service Pack 1 to use the site.

Microsoft updates slimmed-down Windows

As part of its effort to assuage European authorities, Microsoft has made changes to its Windows XP N--the slimmed-down version of the operating system it was ordered to offer last year.

Microsoft said on Wednesday that the revamped software will be made available to computer makers next week in five language versions and will be available for retailers July 1. Ten additional language versions will go on sale in July, Microsoft said. The software will be available in Home and Professional editions and is priced the same as the full-featured versions.

Microsoft to Patch Ten Vulnerabilities

This coming Tuesday, Microsoft will release 10 security related updates in response to recently discovered vulnerabilities. The updates are part of Microsoft's shockingly stable monthly patch cycle.

Out of the seven holes being patched, only one has been deemed "critical" by Microsoft's security rating system. Also included will be a patch for an "important" Exchange problem, and two moderate risk alerts affecting Windows Services for UNIX, ISA Servers and Small Business Servers.

According to Microsoft's rating system, vulnerabilities covered in the update prevent "malicious Internet worms from spreading, which do not require any action on the part of the user". No other information was provided, The patches will be released along side an update to their Malicious Software Removal Tool.
